For the first part of class, students learned about careers in the Family and Consumer Science areas and future classes they can take in this area. Students were given their final grades and citizenship. Students were also given time to look their grade over carefully for any mistakes I may have made or computer errors. We also made sure they knew which College and Career Awareness teacher and section they have starting on Monday (4th term/quarter).
March 30, 2016
Students had a 25 question post-assessment on what they earned about this term in College and Career Awareness. Afterwards, we finished the presentations from last Wednesday about the "Cord Mess."
March 17th-March 29th, 2016
Students will be working on a Project-based learning activity called Cord Mess. They will be working in small teams to create a product that can control messy cords. They have to make a prototype of the product, as well as how to package and market the product. Presentations will be on December 4th.
March 9-16th, 2016
Students are working their pencil roll-up projects. Students who are behind were told to start coming after school or during diamond time so they can catch-up. Pencil roll pouches are due on Wednesday, March 16th at the end of class.
March 8, 2016
Today, students learned how to thread a sewing machine by watching a teacher demonstration and doing it on their machines while I walked them through it. Students were encouraged to help each other along the way. Any student who missed this day is highly encouraged to go to my website to see the video downloads on winding a bobbin, threading a bobbin case and threading a machine or go to the following site and click on the first video on bobbin winding. Students were shown how to sew using paper. They learned how to steer, raise and lower the presser foot and how the fabric/paper moves through the machines. They also picked up their sewing supplies and placed these in bins for each class period.

Students learned about where different fibers come from and how fibers are made into fabrics. They also learned and what woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics are and how they are produced.
February 24, 2016
Students were give 9 different fabric samples and had to guess what the fabric content of each was. We then tested the samples by burning them to see what the reaction would be and if the students' hypotheses were correct

We are learning how to resolve family feuds by using the problem solving process. This was an in-class activity, so students will want to review the information in the PowerPoint on the website if they were absent today.

Today, students learned what soft skills are, why they are important and then practiced common soft skills in class. This was an in-class activity, so students who were absent should review the short PowerPoint on the website.

Students finished their group Preschool/child care lesson plan and turn it in. They then had a choice between watching a video on how children learn through play or making a paper-bag puppet to use when they babysit younger children.

Students made Vanishing Breakfast Biscuits to help reinforce our lesson about the importance of reading recipes and cooking with children. Any student who was absent (For ANY reason) must make the lab at home and return the lab make-up form signed by a parent stating that their student did the assignment.

We learned about Child Development, what child care centers are and what DAP is (Developmentally Appropriate Practices). We also identified the ways children learn and what kinds of learning activities are done with younger children. Students then started creating a lesson plan to use in a child care center using what they learned in class today. They will finish these in class on Friday.

We identified and discussed what makes a quality child care center and categorized the different qualities the students came up with on a concept map.

Students had an agriculture lesson on where food comes from and how it is grown. They also got to create their own imaginary ice cream flavor.

Students learned about food scientists and what they do. They had to research how a common food is made and share that with at least 5 other students in class.

Students learned about how to make healthier life choices, as well as how to take their pulse.
February 8-9, 2016
Students were introduced to the career of Food Stylists. We introduced them to the career, show them a couple of video demonstrations of what they do, as well as how to garnish plates. On the 9th, they made french toast and had to style them the best they could before eating their project.
