We identified and discussed what makes a quality child care center and categorized the different qualities the students came up with on a concept map.

Students learned about food scientists and what they do. They had to research how a common food is made and share that with at least 5 other students in class.

Students had a CTE month assembly today. When they were not in there, they were watching "What's in your Backpack." If a student was absent, they do not need to make it up.

We discussed the changes which have taken place and how students could change their diets to align more closely to the plate, as well as what a correct serving size was. Students had a strawberry smoothie lab today so they could learn how labs are run, where things are, as well as practice measuring and reading recipes. Students watched me demonstrate how to measure different ingredients and the importance of measuring correctly. The students will demonstrate what they learned when measuring out ingredients in future cooking labs.

Students learned about how recipes are formatted and why. We also covered the importance of reading through a recipe before beginning and collecting all of the ingredients to make sure they have them all. Students worked as a group on an activity to figure out the names of different types of cooking equipment and the meanings of different cooking terms.

Students were introduced to the foods lab and where told lab expectations and rules, as well as how labs are run and where different things are the lab. Their first cooking lab is on Monday.

Students used what they learned yesterday about Food borne illnesses to figure out a mystery about how people got food poisoning from a picnic. Students worked together to solve the mystery, which took both days in class.

Students started learning about food borne illnesses and food safety. We had a demonstration activity and then they watched a few video clips about food safety, careers in food safety and what people usually do wrong in their own kitchens.

Students were encouraged to help each other along the way. Students learned about where different fibers come from and how fibers are made into fabrics. They also learned and what woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics are and how they are produced.

Students were give 9 different fabric samples and had to guess what the fabric content of each was. We then tested the samples by burning them to see what the reaction would be and if the students' hypotheses were correct.

For the first part of class, students learned about careers in the Family and Consumer Science areas and future classes they can take in this area. Students were given their final grades and citizenship. Students were also given time to look their grade over carefully for any mistakes I may have made or computer errors. We also made sure they knew which College and Career Awareness teacher and section they have starting on Monday (2nd term/quarter).

Students had a 25 question post-assessment on what they earned about this term in College and Career Awareness. Afterwards, we finished the presentations from yesterday about the "Cord Mess."

October 22-28, 2015

We also identified the ways children learn and what kinds of learning activities are done with younger children. Students then started creating a lesson plan to use in a child care center using what they learned in class today. They will finish these in class on Tuesday.

Students used their assignment from yesterday to help guide them through an activity called "Reality Check" on UtahFutures.org to show them how much the lifestyle of their dreams may cost them and to show them some possible careers they can have to meet that lifestyle. Students learned about different Child Care and Child Development careers available to them, as well as what child care, day care and family care centers are and what is required to run one. They also had to write down the definitions of a child care center and a family care center.

Today students learned about the importance of learning how to balance family life, work and leisure activities by using time management and organizational skills. We also had a short assessment to see what they have learned from this unit.

Students discussed the terms independence, freedom and responsibility and how they relate to each other. We then went through the 5 steps of problem solving, which the students had to write down. We then gave some examples of how the problem solving process could be used. We also discussed a few common careers students can go into to help families and members of families deal with problems they may be facing.

Students learned about the "Keys to Caregiving" which included physical, emotional and guidance needs. While watching a video on child care safety and babysitting, students had 11 true/false questions to answer or they could play a safety game to earn points for their team. Afterward, students learned about different kinds and types of play teachers use in a preschool and day care setting to teach the children in their care while also playing.

Today is the CTE Intro Job Shadow Day! Most students were at work "on the job" and have a written assignment to complete while they are gone. These will be due tomorrow. Students who stayed were placed into one of three groups and had different career related activities to complete throughout the first half of the day. These were due at the end of each class period when they were done.

Students finished their Foods and Nutrition unit today by taking and assessment on what they have learned. We then started our last unit on Families and Child Care, so they started learning about manners and social skills.

Students had a lab to review measuring and reading a recipe. It was called "Oatmeal munchies" and was worth 50 points on their grade. Students learned about the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for. We will finish identifying the parts on Wednesday in preparation for a quiz next Tuesday on 12 different parts of the sewing machines. They will also use this information while practicing on the machines, as well as winding bobbins and threading the machines next Monday. The students took a pre-test for the FACS CTE Intro class. It has 25 questions on it with questions from each unit they will have this term. If they missed the pre-test, they will need to make it up. Their end-of-term CTE test will be similar to this test. We then assigned them their career research paper on a Clothing and Textile related career. This will be due on April 27th.

Students learned about 1/2 of the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for in preparation for a quiz next Friday on 12 different parts of the sewing machines. They will also use this information while practicing on the machines, as well as winding bobbins and threading the machines tomorrow. On my website on the CTE games page, there is also a Parts of the Sewing machine review PowerPoint that the kids can print and cut out to use as flash cards to help them review for this quiz.

Students learned about how clothing is made and how assembly lines work, especially in the clothing industry. They did have 10 questions to answer and turn in before the end of class.

Students watched a video on how to care for fabrics and fibers titled "Laundry 101." They also had a few questions they had to answer using the information in the video.

February 18, 2015

Students were assigned a career research paper on a Clothing and Textiles related career. This will be due on March 9, 2015. The students collected their sewing supplies for the upcoming sewing unit and learned about the rules and expectations of their behavior in the sewing lab, as well as how they will be graded and what assignments/projects they will complete during the rest of this unit.

Students finished their Foods and Nutrition unit today by taking and assessment on what they have learned. We will start the clothing and textile unit tomorrow.

February 13, 2015

Students Foods and Nutrition related career paper was due today. We then learned about different careers in foods and nutrition. They also had a fill-in-the-blank worksheet to complete and should have turned this in to the turn-in basket for points. We also talked about Foods classes students can take in 9th-12th grade.

Students had a lab to review measuring and reading a recipe. It was called "Oatmeal munchies" and was worth 50 points on their grade. Any student who was absent for any reason needs to get the recipe from me and make them at home and get the make-up sheet signed by a parent or guardian, then turn it in to the turn-in basket.

Students made the Ramen Noodle stir-fry today. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for any reason for this lab, they must make it up at home and return the make-up sheet signed by a parent and turn it in to the turn-in basket.

Students learned about the parts to a food label and about the importance of reading food labels to help become better consumers and to become more aware of what is in the foods they are eating.

Students made a fruit salad today to reinforce their lesson on MyPlate and healthy eating they learned about earlier in the week. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for any reason for this lab, they must make it up at home and return the lab make-up form signed by a parent/guardian to earn the points.

Students watched a video on Kitchen safety while answering some questions based on the video. Afterwards, they had some true and false questions about what things were and were not safe to do in the kitchens.

Students made Vanishing Breakfast Biscuits to help reinforce our lesson about the importance of reading recipes. Any student who was absent (For ANY reason) must make the lab at home and return the lab make-up form signed by a parent stating that their student did the assignment.

Students watched a video about MyPlate, which took the place of the MyPyramid three years ago. We discussed the changes which have taken place and how students could change their diets to align more closely to the plate. The students also had some true and false questions to work on during the last few minutes of class, but was not turned in for points.

Students used their measuring skills while making a Fruit freeze. They had to demonstrate proper lab procedures and hygiene as well. Students who were not here today (for any reason) will have to make the lab at home and return the lab make-up form signed by a parent saying their student made the lab in order to make-up the missing points.

Students were introduced to the foods lab and where told lab expectations and rules, as well as how labs are run and where different things are the lab. Their first cooking lab is tomorrow and is the fruit freeze.

Students learned about how recipes are formatted and why. We also covered the importance of reading through a recipe before beginning and collecting all of the ingredients to make sure they have them all. They had an activity called "Rate the Recipe" to turn in as they left class.

Students watched a video titled "Measuring Math" which demonstrated how to measure different ingredients and the importance of measuring correctly. The students will demonstrate what they learned when measuring out ingredients in future cooking labs. There were also two extra credit sheets available to the students on doubling a recipe, measuring abbreviations and equivalents. These can be turned in anytime between now and the end of the term.

Then, students started learning about food borne illnesses and food safety. They watched "Food Safety" and answered some questions, which we then went over and graded and discussed afterward. We also discussed food safety when dining out, especially at fast food restaurants and about cross-contamination.

The students took a pre-test for the FACS CTE Intro class. It has 25 questions on it with questions from each unit they will have this term. If they missed the pre-test, they will need to make it up. Their end-of-term CTE test will be similar to this test. We then assigned them their career research paper on a Foods and Nutrition related career. This will be due on February 13th.

Welcome to the new term and to the Family and Consumer Science (FACS) section of CTE Intro. Today we went through the course description, gave out hall passes and late passes, created a seating chart, and went through where items are in the room, as well as what CTE Intro. is.

For the first part of class, students learned about careers in the Family and Consumer Science areas and future classes they can take in this area. Students were given their final grades and citizenship. Students were also given time to look their grade over carefully for any mistakes I may have made or computer errors. They also cleaned a part of the sewing lab.

The students took their Child care unit assessment. There is no redos offered on this. If they missed the quiz, it becomes the student's responsibility to arrange a time to come in and take it by January 22nd (Thursday).

Students learned about the "Keys to Caregiving" which included physical, emotional and guidance needs.

Students learned about and defined social skills, acceptable and unacceptable behavior and manners. They discussed what each one meant and gave examples of each. We then moved on to how this relates to the stereotypes we have and how we treat other people based on those stereotypes.

Students learned about the three types of communication (written, verbal and non-verbal) as well as how our personalities effect our communication skills. We also learned about the importance of attentive listening skills.
