May 9, 2014
Students watched a video about MyPlate, which took the place of the MyPyramid three years ago. We discussed the changes which have taken place and how students could change their diets to align more closely to the plate. The students also had some true and false questions to work on during the last few minutes of class, but was not turned in for points.

Students made Vanishing Breakfast Biscuits to help reinforce our lesson about the importance of reading recipes. Any student who was absent (For ANY reason) must make the lab at home and return the lab make-up form signed by a parent stating that their student did the assignment.

Students used their measuring skills while making a Fruit freeze. They had to demonstrate proper lab procedures and hygiene as well. Students who were not here today (for any reason) will have to make the lab at home and return the lab make-up form signed by a parent saying their student made the lab in order to make-up the missing points. Job Shadow papers were also due today. They had to have both papers filled out correctly and completely in order to turn them in.

Students watched a video on Kitchen safety while answering some questions based on the video. Afterwards, they had some true and false questions about what things were and were not safe to do in the kitchens. Their Foods and Nutrition Career research paper was also due today.

Students were introduced to the foods lab and where told lab expectations and rules, as well as how labs are run and where different things are the lab. Their first cooking lab is Wednesday and is the fruit freeze.

Students learned about how recipes are formatted and why. We also covered the importance of reading through a recipe before beginning and collecting all of the ingredients to make sure they have them all. They had an activity called "Rate the Recipe" to turn in as they left class.

Students watched a video titled "Measuring Math" which demonstrated how to measure different ingredients and the importance of measuring correctly. The students will demonstrate what they learned when measuring out ingredients in future cooking labs. There were also two extra credit sheets available to the students on doubling a recipe, measuring abbreviations and equivalents. These can be turned in anytime between now and the end of the term.

We finished discussing food safety today by reviewing the top ten mistakes people make when preparing food at home and what the students can do to prevent these mistakes from occurring.

First, students were assigned a Career research paper on a career related to Foods and Nutrition. This will be due a week from today (Tuesday, May 6th). Then, students started learning about food borne illnesses and food safety. They watched "Food Safety" and answered some questions, which we then went over and graded and discussed afterward. We also discussed food safety when dining out, especially at fast food restaurants and about cross-contamination.

First, I explained about and passed out the forms for the upcoming FHMS Job Shadow day. Extra forms can be found on and printed from my website. Students learned about different careers in clothing and textiles. They also had a fill-in-the-blank worksheet to complete and should have turned this in to the turn-in basket for points. They also learned about what classes are available here at FHMS and at Herriman High if they are interested in learning more about clothing and sewing skills.

Students learned about how clothing is made and how assembly lines work, especially in the clothing industry. They did have 10 questions to answer and turn in before the end of class.

Students continued working on their pencil roll-up projects. Students who are behind were told to start coming after school or during diamond time so they can catch-up. Pencil roll pouches are due on Thursday, April 24th at the end of class.

All of the CTE Intro classes watched the teacher demonstration on how to do their pencil roll project. Many students turned in their CTE sewing permits and started on their pencil roll projects. All CTE Sewing Permits are due to me by the end of class on Tuesday or it will be considered late.

Students learned how to use the rotary cutters, mats and sergers. Afterwards, they had the rest of class to work on their bookmarks. If students were absent, they need to go to my website or youtube channel and watch the video clips from YouTube on how to use a rotary cutter and how to use a serger. All CTE Sewing Permits are due to me by Tuesday, April 22nd at the end of each class period or it will be considered late.

Students reviewed how to thread a machine, read through and watched a demonstration on the instructions for making bookmarks and spent the rest of class time working on their bookmarks.

We took the parts of the sewing machine quiz. Students who passed the quiz with 9 out of 12 correct or better stapled the quiz to their CTE sewing permit and earned the first 5 points on their permits. Students who did not pass can come after school on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week or during Diamond Time on Tuesday to retake it. They must be in the classroom and ready for the quiz by 2:40. We then finished crazy stitching (stitching on paper), which is the next step on their sewing permits. The Career Research assignments were also due today during class.

Today, students learned how to wind a bobbin and thread a sewing machine by watching a teacher demonstration and doing it on their machines while I walked them through it. Students were encouraged to help each other along the way. Any student who missed this day is highly encouraged to go to my website to see the video downloads on winding a bobbin, threading a bobbin case and threading a machine or go to the following site and click on the first video on bobbin winding. The teacher demonstrated how the sewing machines work and safety procedures when using the machines. Students then had the rest of the class period to practice using the machines by stitching on paper (crazy stitching).
April 7-8, 2014
Students learned about the parts of the sewing machine they will be using and what they are used for. We will finish identifying the parts tomorrow in preparation for a quiz next Friday, April 11th on 12 different parts of the sewing machines. They will also use this information while practicing on the machines, as well as winding bobbins and threading the machines next Thursday. On my website on the CTE games page, there is also a "Parts of the Sewing machine" review PowerPoint that the kids can print and cut out to use as flash cards to help them review for this quiz. Students were also assigned a Career Research assignment to research a career in the clothing and textile industry. These will be due on Friday, April 11th during each class period.
