February 7, 2014

Students watched a video about MyPlate, which took the place of the MyPyramid three years ago. We discussed the changes which have taken place and how students could change their diets to align more closely to the plate. The students also had some true and false questions to work on during the last few minutes of class, but was not turned in for points.

February 6, 2014

Students made Vanishing Breakfast Biscuits to help reinforce our lesson about the importance of reading recipes. Any student who was absent (For ANY reason) must make the lab at home and return the lab make-up form signed by a parent stating that their student did the assignment.

February 5, 2014

Students used their measuring skills while making a Fruit freeze. They had to demonstrate proper lab procedures and hygiene as well. Students who were not here today (for any reason) will have to make the lab at home and return the lab make-up form signed by a parent saying their student made the lab in order to make-up the missing points.

February 4, 2014

Students watched a video titled "Measuring Math" which demonstrated how to measure different ingredients and the importance of measuring correctly. The students will demonstrate what they learned when measuring out ingredients in future cooking labs. There were also two extra credit sheets available to the students on doubling a recipe, measuring abbreviations and equivalents. These can be turned in anytime between now and the end of the term.

Students were introduced to the foods lab and where told lab expectations and rules, as well as how labs are run and where different things are the lab. Their first cooking lab is Wednesday and is the fruit freeze. They were also reminded about the last after school open lab days of this term.

January 31, 2014

We finished discussing food safety today by reviewing the top ten mistakes people make when preparing food at home and what the students can do to prevent these mistakes from occurring.

January 30, 2014

Students started learning about food borne illnesses and food safety. They watched "Food Safety" and answered some questions, which we then went over and graded and discussed afterward. We also discussed food safety when dining out, especially at fast food restaurants and about cross-contamination.

January 29, 2014

Students learned about how recipes are formatted and why. We also covered the importance of reading through a recipe before beginning and collecting all of the ingredients to make sure they have them all. They had an activity called "Read the Recipe" to turn in as they left class.

January 28, 2014

The students took a pre-test for the FACS CTE Intro class. It has 25 questions on it with questions from each unit they will have this term. If they missed the pre-test, they will need to make it up. Their end-of-term CTE test will be similar to this test. We then had an activity on the different FACS pathways.

Welcome to the new term and to the Family and Consumer Science (FACS) section of CTE Intro. Today we went through the course description, gave out hall passes and late passes, created a seating chart, and went through where items are in the room, as well as what CTE Intro. is.

January 23, 2014

Students were given their final grades and citizenship for this term. Students were also given time to look their grade over carefully for any mistakes I may have made or computer errors. They also cleaned a part of the sewing lab and we discussed what teacher they have for CTE Intro next term.

January 22, 2014

Students learned about some more FACS related careers, including Interior Design, teaching, etc. They had an assignment to go along with this. We also covered a few more classes students can take at Herriman High in the FACS area.

January 21, 2014

The students took their end-of-term test for the CTE Intro class. It has 40 questions on it with ten questions from each CTE unit they had this term, as well as the different careers the learned about. There is no redo tests offered on this. If they missed the test, it becomes the student's responsibility to arrange a time to come in and take it by January 23rd (Thursday).

Students met in the B202 computer lab today and had all of class time to study and review for their unit test tomorrow on the terms and definitions from this unit. They could play my jeopardy and matching games online, which are found on my website, or they could play Bingo. The test will be first thing Tuesday at the start of class!

Students learned about different Child Care and Child Development careers available to them, as well as what child care, day care and family care centers are and what is required to run one. They also had to write down the definitions of a child care center and a family care center.

Today students learned about the importance of learning how to balance family life, work and leisure activities by using time management and organizational skills.

Students learned about different Child Care and Child Development careers available to them, as well as what child care, day care and family care centers are and what is required to run one. They also had to write down the definitions of a child care center and a family care center. Afterward, students learned about different kinds and types of play teachers use in a preschool and day care setting to teach the children in their care while also playing.
