April 12, 2013

Students watched a video on how to care for fabrics and fibers titled "Laundry 101." They also had a few questions they had to answer using the information in the video.

April 11, 2013

Students learned about different careers in clothing and textiles. They also had a fill-in-the-blank worksheet to complete and should have turned this in to the turn-in basket for points. They also learned about what classes are available here at FHMS and at Herriman High if they are interested in learning more about clothing and sewing skills.

April 10, 2013

The teacher demonstrated how the sewing machines work and safety procedures when using the machines. Students then had the rest of the class period to practice using the machines by stitching on paper (crazy stitching).

April 9, 2013

Students learned the rest of the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for. We also learned about common pieces of sewing equipment the students will be using in class. They will use this information while practicing on the machines, as well as winding bobbins and threading the machines next Tuesday. On my website on the CTE games page, there is also a "Parts of the Sewing machine" review PowerPoint that the kids can print and cut out to use as flash cards to help them review for this quiz next week.

Students learned about 1/2 of the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for. We will finish identifying the parts tomorrow in preparation for a quiz next Monday on 12 different parts of the sewing machines. The students collected their sewing supplies for the upcoming sewing unit and learned about the rules and expectations of their behavior in the sewing lab, as well as how they will be graded and what assignments/projects they will complete during the rest of this unit.

Students had a short pre-test on what we are going to learn about this term. Afterwards, we learned about where food, clothing and shelter comes from.

Today we went through the course description, gave out hall passes and late passes, created a seating chart, and went through where items are in the room as well as what CTE Intro. is.

March 27, 2013

For the first part of class, students learned about careers in the Family and Consumer Science areas and future classes they can take in this area. Students were given their final grades and citizenship. Students were also given time to look their grade over carefully for any mistakes I may have made or computer errors. They also cleaned a part of the sewing lab.

March 26, 2013

Students had a final for this term to take today on what they have learned about in this section of CTE Intro. This will be scored today and put on their final grade so they can check those tomorrow before grades are finalized.

March 25, 2013

The students took their vocabulary test for the family and child care unit. It was on the terms and definitions from this unit. There is no redo tests offered on this since we had discussed it so much and told them exactly what would be on the test. If they missed the test, they MUST make it up TOMORROW, March 26, 2013 OR I CANNOT GET IT ON THEIR FINAL GRADE.

Students had a review for their Families and Independent Living Skills test. They played Bingo or Jeopardy, depending on what the class chose. They can also play the review games online tonight to help them review. Both are found on my google site under test reviews and games. Today was also the last day they could turn in any late/missing assignments or extra credit, including unused hall passes and late passes.

Students learned about different jobs and careers in the field on Child Development. They had some questions to complete during class.

Students learned about the different types of play and activities they can do with young children, especially those who are preschool age when they babysit or as a possible career in the future. They took some notes as we discussed and they will use these to study for their upcoming test.

March 19, 2013

Students learned about different Child Care and Child Development careers available to them, as well as what child care, day care and family care centers are and what is required to run one. They also had to write down the definitions of a child care center and a family care center.

March 18, 2013

While watching a video on child care safety and babysitting, students had 11 true/false questions to answer or they could play a safety game to earn points for their team.

Students learned about the "Keys to Caregiving" which included physical, emotional and guidance needs.

March 14, 2013

Students discussed the terms independence, freedom and responsibility and how they relate to each other. We then went through the 5 steps of problem solving, which the students had to write down. We then gave some examples of how the problem solving process could be used. We also discussed a few common careers students can go into to help families and members of families deal with problems they may be facing.

Today students learned about the importance of learning how to balance family life, work and leisure activities by using time management and organizational skills.

March 12, 2013

Students learned about and defined social skills, acceptable and unacceptable behavior and manners. They discussed what each one meant and gave examples of each. We then moved on to how this relates to the stereotypes we have and how we treat other people based on those stereotypes.

March 11, 2013

Students learned about the three types of communication, written, verbal and non-verbal. They also watched a video clip of each type of communication to help them remember the three types. We also discussed the importance of listening to others and watching their body language. Also, students were notified that the last day to turn in late or missing assignments and extra credit is March 22nd DURING class. No assignments or extra credit will be accepted after this day.
