Students learned about different careers in clothing and textiles. They also had a fill-in-the-blank worksheet to complete and should have turned this in to the turn-in basket for points. They also learned about what classes are available here at FHMS and at Herriman High if they are interested in learning more about clothing and sewing skills.

As students finished their locker pocket organizer and turned it in, they could then work on a rise and stretch activity making a pencil roll-up pouch for their colored pencils or anything else they have a use for one. Today is also their last sewing day in class. If they don't finish in class today, they will have to come during Diamond Time or after school to finish their projects up.

February 28-March 6, 2013
Students had the whole class period each day to work on their locker pockets. Most students will finish their locker pockets by the end of class on Wednesday, March 6th. If they don't finish by the end of class on Thursday, they will need to come in Thursday after school or during Diamond Time to finish.

Students were shown how to complete their locker pockets for their class project. They read through the instructions and grading rubric and the teacher demonstrated the process of making a locker pocket. Students were then given the rest of class time to finish their bookmark and sewing permit, then they could start on their locker pockets.
February 26, 2013
Students learned how to use the rotary cutters, mats and sergers. Afterwards, they had the rest of class to work on their bookmarks. If students were absent, they need to go to my website and watch the video clips from YouTube on how to use a rotary cutter and how to use a serger. All CTE Sewing Permits are due to me by Thursday, February 28th at the end of each class period or it will be considered late.

We took the parts of the sewing machine quiz. Students who passed the quiz with 8 out of 12 correct or better stapled the quiz to their CTE sewing permit and earned the first 5 points on their permits. Students who did not pass can come after school on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week to retake it. They must be in the classroom and ready for the quiz by 2:40. We then finished crazy stitching (stitching on paper), which is the next step on their sewing permits. We will start sewing on their bookmarks on Monday
February 21, 2013
Students learned how to wind a bobbin and thread a sewing machine by watching a teacher demonstration and doing it on their machines while I walked them through it. Students were encouraged to help each other along the way. Any student who missed this day is highly encouraged to go to my website to see the video downloads on winding a bobbin, threading a bobbin case and threading a machine or go to the following site and click on the first video on bobbin winding. This will help them stay caught up with the rest of the class. Go to: http://familylife.byu.edu/sewingvideos/

The teacher demonstrated how the sewing machines work and safety procedures when using the machines. Students then had the rest of the class period to practice using the machines by stitching on paper (crazy stitching).

Students learned about 1/3rd of the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for. We also learned about common pieces of sewing equipment the students will be using in class. They will use this information while practicing on the machines, as well as winding bobbins and threading the machines next Thursday. On my website on the CTE games page, there is also a "Parts of the Sewing machine" review PowerPoint that the kids can print and cut out to use as flash cards to help them review for this quiz next week.

Students had a lab to review measuring and reading a recipe. It was called "Oatmeal munchies" and was worth 50 points on their grade. Any student who was absent for any reason needs to get the recipe from me and make them at home and get the recipe signed by a parent or guardian, then turn it in to the turn-in basket.
February 11, 2013
Students made the Ramen Noodle stir-fry today. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for any reason for this lab, they must make it up at home and return the recipe signed by a parent and turn it in to the turn-in basket.
