February 8, 2013

Students learned about different careers in foods and nutrition. They also had a matching worksheet to complete and should have turned this in to the turn-in basket for points.

February 7, 2013

Students made a fruit salad today to reinforce their lesson on MyPlate and healthy eating they learned about earlier in the week. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for any reason for this lab, they must make it up at home and return the recipe signed by a parent/guardian to earn the points.

Students learned about the parts to a food label and about the importance of reading food labels to help become better consumers and to become more aware of what is in the foods they are eating.

Students made Vanishing Breakfast Biscuits to help reinforce our lesson about the importance of reading recipes. Any student who was absent (For ANY reason)must make the lab at home and return the recipe signed by a parent stating that their student did the assignment.

February 4, 2013

Students watched a video about My Plate, which took the place of the MyPyramid two years ago. We discussed the changes which have taken place and how students could change their diets to align more closely to the plate. The students also had some true and false questions to work on during the last few minutes of class, but was not turned in for points.

Students watched a video on Kitchen safety while answering some questions based on the video. Afterwards, they had some true and false questions about what things were and were not safe to do in the kitchens.

January 31, 2013

Students used their measuring skills while making a Fruit freeze. They had to demonstrate proper lab procedures and hygiene as well. Students who were not here today (for any reason) will have to make the lab at home and return a note signed by a parent saying their student made the lab in order to make-up the missing points.

January 30, 2013

Students were introduced to the foods lab and where told lab expectations and rules, as well as how labs are run and where different things are the lab. Their first cooking lab is tomorrow and is the fruit freeze.

January 29, 2013

Students watched a video titled "Measuring Math" which demonstrated how to measure different ingredients and the importance of measuring correctly. The students will demonstrate what they learned when measuring out ingredients in future cooking labs. There were also two extra credit sheets available to the students on doubling a recipe, measuring abbreviations and equivalents. These can be turned in anytime between now and the end of the term.

Students learned about how recipes are formatted and why. We also covered the importance of reading through a recipe before beginning and collecting all of the ingredients to make sure they have them all.

We finished discussing food safety today by reviewing the top ten mistakes people make when preparing food at home and what the students can do to prevent these mistakes from occurring.

January 24, 2013

Students started learning about food borne illnesses and food safety. They watched a video on food safety and answered some questions, which we then went over and graded and discussed afterward.

January 23, 2013

Students took a quick pre-test to see what they already know as they are coming into the FACS rotation of CTE intro. This will be used to compare to their final test at the end of the semester to see what they learned. Afterward, we went through were food, shelter and clothing comes from (raw materials/Agriculture).

Today we went through the course description for the FACS rotation of CTE intro., gave out hall passes and late passes, created a seating chart, showed students how to access the website and blog and how to sign up for text reminders, and went through where items are in the room.

January 17, 2013

For the first part of class, students learned about careers in the Family and Consumer Science areas and future classes they can take in this area. Students were given their final grades and citizenship. Students were also given time to look their grade over carefully for any mistakes I may have made or computer errors. They also cleaned a part of the sewing lab.

January 16,2013

The students took their vocabulary test for the family and child care unit. It was on the terms and definitions from this unit. There is no redo tests offered on this since we had discussed it so much and told them exactly what would be on the test. If they missed the test, they MUST make it up TOMORROW, JANUARY 17TH OR I CANNOT GET IT ON THEIR FINAL GRADE.

Students watched presentations from the Work-based learning students from Herriman High. They had internships to complete and had to present about their internships to CTE Intro students.

January 14, 2013

Students had a review for their Families and Independent Living Skills test. They played Bingo or Jeopardy, depending on what the class chose. They can also play the review games online tonight to help them review. Both are found on my google site under test reviews and games.

January 11, 2013

Today was the last day students could turn in any late assignments, as well as any extra credit and unused late and hall passes for extra credit. Students learned about different jobs and careers in the field on Child Development. They had some questions to complete during class.

January 10, 2013

Students learned about the different types of play and activities they can do with young children, especially those who are preschool age when they babysit or as a possible career in the future. They took some notes as we discussed and they will use these to study for their upcoming test.

Janaury 9, 2013

Students learned about different Child Care and Child Development careers available to them, as well as what child care, day care and family care centers are and what is required to run one. They also had to write down the definitions of a child care center and a family care center.
