Students had the whole class period to work on their locker pockets. Most students will finish their locker pockets by the end of class Wednesday. If they don't finish by the end of class on Wednesday, they will need to come in Wednesday or Thursday after school or during Diamond Time to finish.
October 3, 2012
Students were shown how to complete their locker pockets for their class project. They read through the instructions and grading rubric and the teacher demonstrated the process of making a locker pocket. Students were then given the rest of class time to finish their bookmark and sewing permit, then they could start on their locker pockets.
October 2, 2012
Students learned how to use the rotary cutters, mats and sergers. Afterwards, they had the rest of class to work on their bookmarks. If students were absent, they need to go to my website and watch the video clips from YouTube on how to use a rotary cutter and how to use a serger. All CTE Sewing Permits are due to me by Thursday, October 4th at the end of each class period or it will be considered late.
October 1, 2012
Students reviewed how to thread a machine, read through and watched a demonstration on the instructions for making bookmarks and spent the rest of class time working on their bookmarks.

September 28, 2012
We took the parts of the sewing machine quiz and students were given their CTE sewing permits to start working on and filling out. Students who passed the quiz with 8 out of 12 correct or better stapled the quiz to their CTE sewing permit and earned the first 5 points on their permits. Students who did not pass can come after school on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to retake it. They must be in the classroom and ready for the quiz by 2:40. We then finished crazy stitching (stitching on paper), which is the next step on their sewing permits. We will start sewing on their bookmarks on Monday.
September 27, 2012
Students learned how to wind a bobbin and thread a sewing machine by watching a teacher demonstration and doing it on their machines while I walked them through it. Students were encouraged to help each other along the way. Any student who missed this day is highly encouraged to go to my website to see the video downloads on winding a bobbin, threading a bobbin case and threading a machine or go to the following site and click on the first video on bobbin winding. This will help them stay caught up with the rest of the class. Go to: http://familylife.byu.edu/sewingvideos/

The teacher demonstrated how the sewing machines work and safety procedures when using the machines. Students then had the rest of the class period to practice using the machines by stitching on paper (crazy stitching).
September 25, 2012
We finished learning the parts of the sewing machines in preparation for their "Parts of the sewing machine quiz" on Friday. I then explained how to do the crazy stitching and demonstrated how the sewing machines work.

Students watched a video on how to care for fabrics and fibers titled "Laundry 101." They also had a few questions they had to answer using the information in the video.

September 21, 2012
Students learned about 1/3rd of the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for. We will finish identifying the parts on Monday of next week in preparation for a quiz next Wednesday on 12 different parts of the sewing machines. They will also use this information while practicing on the machines, as well as winding bobbins and threading the machines next Thursday. On my website on the CTE games page, there is also a "Parts of the Sewing machine" review PowerPoint that the kids can print and cut out to use as flash cards to help them review for this quiz.

The students collected their sewing supplies for the upcoming sewing unit and learned about the rules and expectations of their behavior in the sewing lab, as well as how they will be graded and what assignments/projects they will complete during the rest of this unit.

The students took their vocabulary test for the family and independent living skills unit. It was on the terms and definitions from this unit. There is no redo tests offered on this since we had discussed it so much and told them exactly what would be on the test. If they missed the test, it becomes the student's responsibility to arrange a time to come in and take it sometime next week. After that time, it will go on Skyward as a zero.
September 17, 2012
Students met in the B202 computer lab today and had all of class time to study and review for their unit test tomorrow on the terms and definitions from this unit. They could play my jeopardy and matching games online, which are found on my website, or they could play Bingo. The test will be first thing tomorrow at the start of class!
September 12, 2012
Students met as a large group in the auditorium to learn about what a SEOP is and hear from the counselors what the students are expected to do and their role in their SEOP.
September 14, 2012
Students discussed the terms independence, freedom and responsibility and how they relate to each other. We then went through the 5 steps of problem solving, which the students had to write down. We then gave some examples of how the problem solving process could be used.
September 13, 2012
Students learned about and defined social skills, acceptable and unacceptable behavior and manners. They discussed what each one meant and gave examples of each. We then moved on to how this relates to the stereotypes we have and how we treat other people based on those stereotypes.
