November 1st

Students watched a video about My Plate, which took the place of the MyPyramid a few months ago. We discussed the changes which have taken place and how students could change their diets to align more closely to the plate. The students also had a word search to work on during the last few minutes of class, but was not turned in for points.

October 31st

Students made the Ramen Noodle stir-fry today. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for this lab, they must make it up at home and return the recipe signed by a parent and turn it in to the turn-in basket.

October 28th

Students learned about the parts to a food label and about the importance of reading food labels to help become better consumers and to become more aware of what is in the foods they are eating.

October 27th

Students made a fruit salad today using different cooking terms and pieces of equipment they learned about yesterday. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for this lab, they must make it up at home and return the recipe signed by a parent/guardian to earn the points.

October 26th

Students learned about different cooking terms today, which we related to the importance of reading a recipe before starting to cook so they can look up any cooking term they don't know ahead of time. They did have an assignment that went with this and they turned it in before leaving class.

Monday, October 24, 2011

October 25th

Students made Vanishing Breakfast Biscuits to help reinforce our lesson from Monday about the importance of reading recipes. Any student who was absent must make the lab at home and return the recipe signed by a parent stating that their student did the assignment.

October 24th

Students learned about how recipes are formatted and why. We also covered the importance of reading through a recipe before beginning and collecting all of the ingredients to make sure they have them all. They had an activity called "Read the Recipe" to turn in as they left class.

October 19th

Students used their measuring skills while making a Fruit freeze. They had to demonstrate proper lab procedures and hygiene as well. Students who were not here today (for any reason) will have to make the lab at home and return a note signed by a parent saying their student made the lab in order to make-up the missing points.

October 18th

Students watched a video titled "Measuring Math" which demonstrated how to measure different ingredients and the importance of measuring correctly. The students will demonstrate what they learned when measuring out ingredients in future cooking labs starting tomorrow with Fruit Freezes.

October 17th

Students were introduced to the foods lab and were told lab expectations and rules, as well as how labs are run and where different things are in the lab. Their first cooking lab is on Wednesday and is the fruit freeze.

October 14th

Students started learning about food borne illnesses and food safety. They watched "The Great Food Fight" and answered some questions, which we then went over and graded and discussed afterward. We also discussed food safety when cooking at home and focused on cross-contamination.

October 13th

Students had one last day to work on their sewing projects before we start on the Foods and Nutirtion unit tomorrow. Anyone who did not finish can come in Tuesday or Wednesday of next week after school to finish or during Diamond Time on Tuesday. Those who were finished learned about different careers in Clothing and Textiles.

October 12th

Students had the whole class period to work on their locker pockets. Most students will finish their locker pockets today. I will see how many students are not finished and if there are enough to warrent another day in the lab. There will also be some make-up days after school next week (Tuesday and Wednesday and Tuesday during Diamond Time)for anyone who did not finish in class.

October 11th

Students were given a second day in the computer lab to finish their "Fabric Online" web quest paper. These are due at the beginning of class on Wednesday (tomorrow), October 12th. Anyone who didn't finish today was told that this is now homework for tonight.

October 10th

Students researched different fabrics and textiles using a website from ThinkQuest.org titled "Fabric Online". Students were given specific questions to research and find. This assignment is due Wednesday at the beginning of their class period and they will have tomorrow to work on this during class as well. October 6th

Students had the whole class period to work on their locker pockets. Some students will finish their locker pockets today, but most will finish these on Wednesday of next week. We will be in the B202 computer lab on Monday and Tuesday to learn about fibers and fabrics.

Students watched the teacher demonstration of the locker pocket project. They were then given the rest of the class period to finish their bookmarks and sewing permits, which they had to turn in before starting on their locker pockets.

Students learned how to use the rotary cutters, mats and sergers. Afterwards, they had the rest of class to work on their bookmarks. All CTE Sewing Permits are due to me by Wednesday, October 5th at the end of each class period or it will be considered late.
