April 1st

The students collected their sewing supplies for the upcoming sewing unit and learned about the rules and expectations of their behavior in the sewing lab, as well as how they will be graded and what assignments/projects they will complete during the rest of this unit.

March 31st

Students watched a video on how to care for fabrics and fibers titled "Gone with the wash." They also had a few questions they had to answer using the information in the video. Students were also called down during 1st and 2nd for vision screenings.

March 30th

Students were given a second day in the computer lab to finish their "Fabric Online" web quest paper. These are due at the beginning of class on Thursday (tomorrow), March 31st. Anyone who didn't finish today was told that this is now homework for tonight.

March 29th

Students researched different fabrics and textiles using a website from ThinkQuest.org titled "Fabric Online". Students were given specific questions to research and find. This assignment is due Friday at the beginning of their class period and they will have tomorrow to work on this during class as well. March 28th

Welcome to Family and Consumer Sciences CTE Introduction at Fort Herriman Middle School. I hope that you have an enjoyable experience this term in class. In order for you to have a good time and learn, you must participate! This means that you need to participate in class discussions, activities and out of class activities which may include blogs, interviews, and a little bit of homework. Have a good time!

Today we went through the course description, gave out hall passes and late passes, created a seating chart, and went through where items are in the room as well as what CTE Intro. is.

March 24th

Students were given their final grades and citizenship. Students were also given time to look their grade over carefully for any mistakes I may have made or computer errors. They also cleaned a part of the sewing lab.

March 23rd

Students learned about different careers available in the areas of Family and Consumer Sciences, including child care, education, clothing, interior design, etc.

March 22nd

2nd and 4th period students learned about some of the new technology being developed for our homes. We read "Life in a very cool lab" which students had to turn in the questions from. Most finished in class, but a few had to take it home for homework. This is due at the first of class tomorrow (Wednesday, March 23rd). 1st and 7th period spent one last day in the sewing lab finishing locker pocket projects, since they had a shorter amount of class time to work on these. Their deadline for any late/missing assignments and any extra credit they wanted on this terms' grade was also due today.

March 21st

The last day in the sewing lab is today, except for 1st and possibly 7th period! If students have not finished tehir locker pockets, they will need to come in during Diamond Time on Tuesday, or stay after school on Wednesday. Anything not finished by Wednesday after school WILL NOT be placed on their grade. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!

March 18th

Students had the whole class period to work on their locker pockets and finish their sewing permits. Some students will finish their locker pockets today, but most will finish these on Monday.

March 17th

Students had the whole class period to work on their locker pockets and finish their sewing permits. Some students will finish their locker pockets on Friday, but most will finish these on Monday and Tuesday. The sewing permits are due today at the end of the class period.

March 16th

Students watched the teacher demonstration of the locker pocket project. They were then given the rest of the class period to finish their bookmarks and start on their locker pockets.

March 15th

Students learned how to use the rotary cutters, mats and sergers. Afterwards, they had the rest of class to work on their bookmarks. All CTE Sewing Permits are due to me by Thursday, March 17th at the end of each class period or it will be considered late.

March 14th

Students had to try and thread the sewing machines on their own today. Once they finished, they continued working on the stitches on their bookmarks while I cam around to check their machines and answer questions. They will learn how to use rotary cutters and sergers tomorrow.

March 11th

Students reviewed how to thread a machine, read through and watched a demonstration on the instruction for making bookmarks and spent the rest of class time working on their bookmarks.

March 10th

Students learned how to wind a bobbin and thread a sewing machine by watching a teacher demonstration and doing it on their machines while I walked them through it. Students were encouraged to help each other along the way. Any student who missed this day is highly encouraged to go to the following site and click on the first video on bobbin winding. March 9th

Students took their "Parts of the sewing machine quiz" today. If they passed it with 8 or more correct, they stapled it to their sewing permit and have now earned 5 points towards their 50 points possible on their sewing permit. If they didn't pass, they can come Thursday or Friday after school for retakes. Students then worked on their "Crazy Stitching" (Stitching on paper). They had to complete three out of the seven papers/patterns they had to choose from. They then had to attach these three papers to their CTE Sewing Permit. If they didn't finish today, they will have time to complete them on Friday.

We finished learning the parts of the sewing machines in preparation for their "Parts of the sewing machine quiz" tomorrow. Students then worked on their "Crazy Stitching" (Stitching on paper). They had to complete three out of the seven papers/patterns they had to choose from. They then had to attach these three papers to their CTE Sewing Permit. If they didn't finish today, they will have time to complete them on Friday.

March 7th

Students learned about half of the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for. We will finish identifying the parts on Tuesday in preparation for a quiz on Wednesday on 12 different parts of the sewing machines. They will then use this information while practicing on the machines, as well as winding bobbins and threading the machines next Thursday.

March 3rd

Students learned about different careers in clothing and textiles. They also had a fill-in-the-blank worksheet to complete and should have turned this in to the turn-in basket for points.
