September 30th

Students had to try and thread the sewing machines on their own today. Once they finished, they continued working on the stitches on their bookmarks while I came around to check their machines and answer questions. They will learn how to use rotary cutters and sergers on Monday.

September 29th

Students reviewed how to thread a machine, read through and watched a demonstration on the instructions for making bookmarks and spent the rest of class time working on their bookmarks.

September 28th

Students learned how to wind a bobbin and thread a sewing machine by watching a teacher demonstration and doing it on their machines while I walked them through it. Students were encouraged to help each other along the way. Any student who missed this day is highly encouraged to go to my website to see the video downloads on winding a bobbin, threading a bobbin case and threading a machine or go to the following site and click on the first video on bobbin winding. September 27th

Students worked on their "Crazy Stitching" today (Stitching on paper). They had to complete three out of the seven papers/patterns they had to chose from. They then had to attach these three papers to their CTE Sewing Permit.

September 26th

Students took their "Parts of the sewing machine quiz" today. If they passed it with 8 or more correct, they stapled it to their sewing permit and have now earned 5 points towards their 50 points possible on their sewing permit. If they didn't pass, they can come Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday after school for retakes. They need to be in AT 111 by 2:40. Students were then shown how to work the sewing machines and how to do their "Crazy Stitching" (Stitching on paper). They have to complete three out of the seven papers/patterns they had to choose from. They will then attach these three papers to their CTE Sewing Permit. They will have the whole class period to work on these tomorrow.

September 23rd

Students watched a video on how to care for fabrics and fibers titled "Clothing Care." They also had a few questions they had to answer using the information in the video.

September 22nd

We finished learning the parts of the sewing machines in preparation for their "Parts of the sewing machine quiz" on Monday. I then explained how their sewing permits work and how to pass off each step. Any time we had left they used to study these parts.

September 21st

Students learned about 2/3rds of the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for. We will finish identifying the parts on Thursday in preparation for a quiz on Monday on 12 different parts of the sewing machines. They will then use this information while practicing on the machines, as well as winding bobbins and threading the machines next Tuesday. On my website on the CTE games page, there is also a Parts of the Sewing machine review PowerPoint that the kids can print and cut out to use as flash cards to help them review for this quiz.

September 20th

The students collected their sewing supplies for the upcoming sewing unit and learned about the rules and expectations of their behavior in the sewing lab, as well as how they will be graded and what assignments/projects they will complete during the rest of this unit.

September 19th

The students took their vocabulary test for the family and independent living skills unit. It was 30 terms and definitions to match up and they were worth 1 point a piece. There is no redo tests offered on this since we had discussed it so much and told them exactly what would be on the test.

September 16th

Students learned about the "Keys to Caregiving" which included physical, emotional and guidance needs. We also discussed their unit vocabulary test, which included specific terms and definitions, which they will take on Thursday which students need to start studying for tonight. They were also reminded about the three review games that are available on my website to help them review for the test.

September 15th

We went through the 5 steps of problem solving, which the students had to write down. We then gave some examples of how the problem solving process could be used. We also discussed family traditions, why we have them and what they are, shared some examples of our own family traditions and watched a clip from "Fiddler on the Roof" about traditions.

September 14th

Students learned about the different types of play and activities they can do with young children, especially those who are preschool age when they babysit or as a possible career in the future. They took some notes as we discussed and they will use these to study for their upcoming test.

September 13th

All of the seventh grade CTE Intro. classes will be meeting each period in the auditorium with the counselors to learn about the SEOP process. There will be an assignment related to this that they have to take home and have signed by a parent. This will be due tomorrow, Wednesday, September 14th.

Students learned about different Child Care and Child Development careers available to them, as well as what child care, day care and family care centers are and what is required to run one.

September 9th

Each class was given the opportunity to chose how they would like to learn about child care safety and child proofing a home. They could chose from a video on child proofing and safety, a game/quiz, or doing a Think/pair/share activity using common items found around the home which may cause injuries.

September 8th

Students completed a state survey on Utah Futures as a pre-assessment for CTE Introduction. They will take a similar survey at the end of the year to see what they have learned. I then showed them some review games that are on my website to help them learn and review the terms and definitions for this unit for their test next Friday, September 16th.

September 7th

Students learned about and defined social skills, acceptable and unacceptable behavior and manners. They discussed what each one meant and gave examples of each. We then moved on to how this relates to friendships and finding good friends.

September 6th

Students learned about six different poor communication techniques and six good communication techniques to help create effective communication with others, as well as attentive listening skills. The students need to keep these notes with them for the end of unit test.

September 2nd

Today we focused on non-verbal body language. Students discussed why they have to be observant when watching for body language and we discused the importance of attentive listening, which we will focus more on Tuesday.

Students learned about the three types of communication; written, verbal and non-verbal. They also watched a video clip of each type of communication to help them remember the three types. We also discussed the importance of listening to others and watching their body language.
