September 30th
Students reviewed how to thread a machine, read through and watched a demonstration on the instruction for making bookmarks and spent the rest of class time working on their bookmarks.
September 29th
Students learned how to wind a bobbin and thread a sewing machine by watching a teacher demonstration and doing it on their machines while I walked them through it. Students were encouraged to help each other along the way. Any student who missed this day is highly encouraged to go to the following site and click on the first video on bobbin winding. September 28th
At the start of class, we put together our CTE Intro. SLC portfolio entry. Then, students worked on their "Crazy Stitching" today (Stitching on paper). They had to complete three out of the seven papers/patterns they had to chose from. They then had to attach these three papers to their CTE Sewing Permit.

September 27th
We took the parts of the sewing machine quiz and students were given their CTE sewing permits to start working on and filling out. Students who passed the quiz with 8 out of 12 correct or better stapled the quiz to their CTE sewing permit and earned the first 5 points on their permits. Students who did not pass can come Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday after school to retake it. They must be in the classroom and ready for the quiz by 2:40. We then started crazy stitching (stitching on paper), which is the next step on their sewing permits.

September 24th
Students finished learning the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for. They have to study these parts over the weekend in preparation for a quiz on Monday where they will need to be able to identify 8 out of 12 parts of the machine to pass. If they don't pass, they can come after school Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday of next week to retake the quiz. These points will count as points (5 points) on their "Sewing Permit." They cannot retake the test on Monday because we have a faculty meeting scheduled for this day.
September 23rd
Students watched a video on how to care for fabrics and fibers titled "Gone with the wash." They also had a few questions they had to answer using the information in the video.
September 22nd
Students learned about half of the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for. We will finish identifying the parts on Friday in preparation for a quiz on Monday on 12 different parts of the sewing machines. They will then use this information while practicing on the machines, as well as winding bobbins and threading the machines next Tuesday and Wednesday.

The students collected their sewing supplies for the upcoming sewing unit and learned about the rules and expectations of their behavior in the sewing lab, as well as how they will be graded and what assignments/projects they will complete during the rest of this unit.

September 20th
There was no school today due to the fire in Herriman. I hope all of you and your families are ok! We will all get through this and I can't wait to see you all when we can get back to the school. My thoughts are with you all!

September 17th
The students took their vocabulary test for the family and independent living skills unit. It was 25 terms and definitions to match up and they were worth 2 points a piece. There is no redo tests offered on this since we had discussed it so much and told them exactly what would be on the test.

September 16th
Students were reminded about the terms and definitions unit test tomorrow. We also had a group activity today. Students read a portion of a book on etiquette and presented the information to the rest of the class by poem, skit, example/non-example or summary presentation.

September 15th
Students learned about and defined social skills, acceptable and unacceptable behavior and manners. They discussed what each one meant and gave examples of each. We then moved on to how this relates to friendships and finding good friends. They were also reminded about their upcoming unit test of Friday.

September 14th
Students learned about the "Keys to Caregiving" which included physical, emotional and guidance needs. We also discussed their unit vocabulary test, which included specific terms and definitions, which they will take on Thursday.

September 13th
We went through the 5 steps of problem solving, which the students had to write down. We then gave some examples of how the problem solving process could be used. We also discussed family traditions, why we have them and what they are, shared some examples of our own family traditions and watched a clip from "Fiddler on the Roof" about traditions.
September 10th
The students learned about work-based learning opportunities students will have in High school. They also had a couple of activities to do dealing with work-based learning which they should have turned in by the end of the class.
Sepetmber 9th
While watching a video on child care safety and childproofing a home, students had to identify at least 5 safety precautions or safety items they currently have at home. Afterward, students had to analyze 5 ways they can eliminate/improve safety hazards at home. It was worth 10 points and is due at the end of class.

September 7th
The classes learned the definition of the term self-concept and we discussed ways that we can raise others self-concept as well as our own. Students then discussed how advertisers come up with packaging for products and how the way we present ourselves to others is like packaging ourselves for others. Students then created a package from a lunch sack that represents themselves and uses positive labels instead of negative. These are due at the start of class tomorrow (Wednesday, September 8th) at the start of class.

September 3rd
Today during 4th and 7th period, students learned about stress reducers. I provided a number of different stress reducers and the class shared ways they prefer to reduce their stress. 1st and 2nd period learned the terms stress, distress, eustress and stressors since they had an assembly during class yesterday.

September 2nd
Today, students learned about stress, stressors, distress and stress reducers. All of the terms were defined, explained and discussed as a group. 1st and 2nd period students had an assembly during their class time, so they will have this lesson tomorrow.
September 1st
Students discussed attentive listening, as well as what attentive listening looks, feels and sounds like as well as what it doesn't look, feel and sound like. They also had an activity on attentive listening.
August 31st
Students had a sub today since I was sick. They learned about what skills are necessary to be a good employee and had a word find they turned in for points.
