December 22nd

Each class was given the opportunity to chose how they would like to learn about child care safety and child proofing a home. They could chose from a video on child proofing and safety, a game/quiz, or doing a Think/pair/share activity using common items found around the home which may cause injuries.

December 21st

Students learned about six different poor communication techniques and six good communication techniques to help create effective communication with others. The students need to keep these notes with them for the end of unit test.

Students learned about the three types of communication; written, verbal and non-verbal. They also watched a video clip of each type of communication to help them remember the three types. We also discussed the importance of listening to others and watching their body language.

Students learned about different careers available in the areas of Family and Consumer Sciences, including child care, education, clothing, interior design, etc.

December 16th

Students watched a video about My Pyramid, which took the place of the food guide pyramid a few years ago. We discussed the changes which have taken place and students could change their diets to align more closely to the pyramid. The students also had a word search to work on during the last few minutes of class, but was not turned in for points.

December 15th

Students had a lab to review measuring and reading a recipe. It was called "Oatmeal munchies" and was worth 50 points on their grade. Any student who was absent needs to get the recipe from me and make them at home and get the recipe signed by a parent or guardian, then turn it in to the turn-in basket.

Students made the Ramen Noodle stir-fry today. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for this lab, they must make it up at home and return the recipe signed by a parent and turn it in to the turn-in basket.

Students made a fruit salad today using their cooking terms and pieces of equipment they learned about yesterday. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for this lab, they must make it up at home and return the recipe signed by a parent/guardian to earn the points.

Students learned about the parts to a food label and about the importance of reading food labels to help become better consumers and to become more aware of what is in the foods they are eating.

Students worked in pairs on an activity to figure out the names of different types of cooking equipment and the meanings of different cooking terms. The answers were provided at the end of class so students could see how they did. They will use this information in each of their cooking labs.

Students used their measuring skills while making Fruit freezes. They had to demonstrate proper lab procedures and hygiene as well. Students who were not here today (for any reason) will have to make the lab at home and return a note signed by a parent saying their student made the lab in order to make-up the missing points.

Students were introduced to the foods lab and where told lab expectations and rules, as well as how labs are run and where different things are the lab. Their first cooking lab is on Tuesday and is the fruit freeze.

We finished discussing food safety today by reviewing the top ten mistakes people make when preparing food at home and what the students can do to prevent these mistakes from occurring. We will be meeting in the foods lab tomorrow and students will be assigned to their cooking lab groups.

Students started learning about food borne illnesses and food safety. They watched "The Great Food Fight" and answered some questions, which we then went over and graded and discussed afterward. We also discussed food safety when cooking at home and focused on cross-contamination.

Today was the last day in the sewing lab to finish up locker pockets during class time. Anyone who did not finish their locker pockets today can come in Tuesday through Thursday after school to finish or can come in during Diamond time next week (Tuesday) to finish up.

Students had to try and thread the sewing machines on their own today. Once they finished, they continued working on the stitches on their bookmarks while I cam around to check their machines and answer questions. They will learn how to use rotary cutters and sergers tomorrow.

Students watched a video on how to care for fabrics and fibers titled "Gone with the wash." They also had a few questions they had to answer using the information in the video.

November 11th

Students learned how to wind a bobbin and thread a sewing machine by watching a teacher demonstration and doing it on their machines while I walked them through it. We took the parts of the sewing machine quiz and students were given their CTE sewing permits to start working on and filling out. Students who passed the quiz with 8 out of 12 correct or better stapled the quiz to their CTE sewing permit and earned the first 5 points on their permits. Students who did not pass can come today (Wednesday)or Thursday after school to retake it. They must be in the classroom and ready for the quiz by 2:40. We then finished crazy stitching (stitching on paper), which is the next step on their sewing permits.

November 9th

They have to study these parts tonight in preparation for a quiz tomorrow where they will need to be able to identify 8 out of 12 parts of the machine to pass. Students learned about half of the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for. We will finish identifying the parts on Tuesday in preparation for a quiz on Wednesday on 12 different parts of the sewing machines. They will then use this information while practicing on the machines, as well as winding bobbins and threading the machines next Wednesday and Thursday.

November 5th

The students collected their sewing supplies for the upcoming sewing unit and learned about the rules and expectations of their behavior in the sewing lab, as well as how they will be graded and what assignments/projects they will complete during the rest of this unit.

November 4th

Students were given a second day in the computer lab to finish their "Fabric Online" web quest paper. These are due at the beginning of class on Friday (tomorrow), November 5th. Anyone who didn't finish today was told that this is now homework for tonight.

November 3rd

Students researched different fabrics and textiles using a website from ThinkQuest.org titled "Fabric Online". Students were given specific questions to research and find. This assignment is due Friday at the beginning of their class period and they will have tomorrow to work on this during class as well. Welcome to Family and Consumer Sciences CTE Introduction at Fort Herriman Middle School. I hope that you have an enjoyable experience this term in class. For the first part of class, students learned about careers in the Family and Consumer Science areas. Students were given their final grades and citizenship. Students were also given time to look their grade over carefully for any mistakes I may have made or computer errors. They also cleaned a part of the sewing lab.

At the start of class, we put together our CTE Intro. SLC portfolio entry. Then, students worked on their "Crazy Stitching" today (Stitching on paper). They had to complete three out of the seven papers/patterns they had to chose from. They then had to attach these three papers to their CTE Sewing Permit.

The students took their vocabulary test for the family and independent living skills unit. It was 25 terms and definitions to match up and they were worth 2 points a piece. There is no redo tests offered on this since we had discussed it so much and told them exactly what would be on the test.

Students learned about and defined social skills, acceptable and unacceptable behavior and manners. They discussed what each one meant and gave examples of each. We went through the 5 steps of problem solving, which the students had to write down. We then gave some examples of how the problem solving process could be used. We also discussed family traditions, why we have them and what they are, shared some examples of our own family traditions and watched a clip from "Fiddler on the Roof" about traditions.

The students learned about work-based learning opportunities students will have in High school. They also had a couple of activities to do dealing with work-based learning which they should have turned in by the end of the class.

Sepetmber 9th

While watching a video on child care safety and childproofing a home, students had to identify at least 5 safety precautions or safety items they currently have at home. Afterward, students had to analyze 5 ways they can eliminate/improve safety hazards at home. It was worth 10 points and is due at the end of class.

The classes learned the definition of the term self-concept and we discussed ways that we can raise others self-concept as well as our own. Students then discussed how advertisers come up with packaging for products and how the way we present ourselves to others is like packaging ourselves for others. Students then created a package from a lunch sack that represents themselves and uses positive labels instead of negative. These are due at the start of class tomorrow (Wednesday, September 8th) at the start of class.

Today during 4th and 7th period, students learned about stress reducers. I provided a number of different stress reducers and the class shared ways they prefer to reduce their stress. 1st and 2nd period learned the terms stress, distress, eustress and stressors since they had an assembly during class yesterday.

These two days are on the block schedule for testing. The students their end-of-year test for the CTE Intro class. It has 41 questions on it with about ten questions from each CTE rotation they had this year. There is no redo tests offered on this. If they missed the test, it becomes the student's responsibility to arrange a time to come in and take it sometime this week (by Friday!).

Today, students learned about stress reducers. I provided a number of different stress reducers and the class shared ways they prefer to reduce their stress. The class also practiced visual relaxation techniques during the last few minutes of class using a prerecorded relaxation tape.

For 1st and 2nd period classes, students learned about some of the new technology being developed for our homes. We read "Life in a very cool lab" which students had to turn in the questions from. Most finished in class, but a few had to take it home for homework. This is due at the first of class tomorrow (Tuesday). Since 4th and 7th period classes missed a day of sewing, they had an extra day in class (today) to finish their locker pocket project. Any student who did not finish this project can stay Wednesday or Thursday of this week after school to finish. If these days don't work for them, they will have to arrange a specific day with me in advance to stay after.

Students watched a video on careers in clothing and textiles. They also had a fill-in-the-blank worksheet to complete as they watched and should have turned this in to the turn-in basket for points.

April 22nd

Students were given today to finish their locker pockets and turn them in. If they didn't finish today, they can arrange to come in after school next week to finish. Those who were already done today were shown how to do the embroidery stitches on the machines and they could use these to create a second, more elaborate, bookmark.

Students had the whole class period to work on their locker pockets. Some students will finish their locker pockets today, but some will finish these on Thursday, which will probably be our last day to work on this.

Students reviewed how to thread a machine and then started on their bookmarks. Detailed instructions were provided as well as a teacher demonstration. They will continue working on these on Thursday and Friday.

Students learned how to wind a bobbin and thread a sewing machine by watching a teacher demonstration and doing it on their machines while I walked them through it. Students worked on their "Crazy Stitching" today (Stitching on paper). They had to complete three out of the seven papers/patterns they had to chose from. They then had to attach these three papers to their CTE Sewing Permit.

Students watched a video on how to care for fabrics and fibers titled "Gone with the wash." They also had a few questions they had to answer using the information in the video.

April 8th

We took the parts of the sewing machine quiz and students were given their CTE sewing permits to start working on and filling out. Students who passed the quiz with 8 out of 12 correct or better stapled the quiz to their CTE sewing permit and earned the first 5 points on their permits. They have to study these parts tonight in preparation for a quiz on Thursday (tomorrow) where they will need to be able to identify 8 out of 12 parts of the machine to pass. If they don't pass, they can come after school Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday of next week to retake the quiz. These points will count as points (5 points) on their "Sewing Permit." They cannot retake the test on Tuesday because we have a faculty meeting scheduled for this day.

The students collected their sewing supplies for the upcoming sewing unit and learned about the rules and expectations of their behavior in the sewing lab, as well as how they will be graded and what assignments/projects they will complete during the rest of this unit.

To start our unit on textiles, students learned about where different fibers come from and how fibers are made into fabrics. They also learned and what woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics are and how they are produced.

Welcome to the new term and to the Family and Consumer Science (FACS) section of CTE Intro. Today we went through the course description, gave out hall passes and late passes, created a seating chart, and went through where items are in the room, as well as what CTE Intro. is.

March 25th

Students were given their final grades and citizenship. Students were also given time to look their grade over carefully for any mistakes I may have made or computer errors. We discussed their new schedules for next term as well. The Q4 CTE teacher will be their next and last rotation for CTE Intro and will be their teacher for term/quarter 4. They also watched a video on food related careers.

March 24th

Students learned about some of the new technology being developed for our homes. We read "Life in a very cool lab" which students had to turn in the questions from. Most finished in class, but a few had to take it home for homework. This is due at the first of class tomorrow (Thursday, March 25th).

1st and 7th period had one last day to finish their locker pockets. 4th and 7th period had an extra day to work on these, so they learned about where different fibers come from and how these fibers are made into fabrics for us to use and wear. Any student who did not finish their locker pocket needs to stay today (Tuesday) after school to finish it. They can also stay tomorrow (Wednesday), but I HAVE to leave at 3:00.

Students played the "Game of Life," the board game, seeing some of the things that may happen in real life. They answered questions on a sheet about some of the things that happened to them during the game and turned it in at the end of class for points.

Students had a lab to review measuring and reading a recipe. It was called "Oatmeal munchies" and was worth 50 points on their grade. Any student who was absent needs to get the recipe from me and make them at home and get the recipe signed by a parent or guardian, then turn it in to the turn-in basket.

Students watched a video about My Pyramid, which took the place of the food guide pyramid a few years ago. We discussed the changes which have taken place and students could change their diets to align more closely to the pyramid. The students also had a word search to work on during the last few minutes of class, but was not turned in for points.

Students made the Ramen Noodle stir-fry today. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for this lab, they must make it up at home and return the recipe signed by a parent and turn it in to the turn-in basket.

Students made a fruit salad today using their cooking terms and pieces of equipment they learned about yesterday. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for this lab, they must make it up at home and return the recipe signed by a parent/guardian to earn the points.

Students learned about the parts to a food label and about the importance of reading food labels to help become better consumers and to become more aware of what is in the foods they are eating.

February 18th

Students worked in pairs on an activity to figure out the names of different types of cooking equipment and the meanings of different cooking terms. The answers were provided at the end of class so students could see how they did. They will use this information in their lab on Monday.

February 17th

Students made Vanishing Breakfast Biscuits to help reinforce our lesson from Friday about the importance of reading recipes. Any student who was absent must make the lab at home and return the recipe signed by a parent stating that their student did the assignment.

Students used their measuring skills while making Fruit freezes. They had to demonstrate proper lab procedures and hygiene as well. Students who were not here today (for any reason) will have to make the lab at home and return a note signed by a parent saying their student made the lab in order to make-up the missing points.

February 12th

Students learned about how recipes are formatted and why. We also covered the importance of reading through a recipe before beginning and collecting all of the ingredients to make sure they have them all. Students had a word-search on the eight points of a good recipe to turn in for 16 points. Most turned it in at the end of class but this will be due on Monday for any student who did not finish today.

February 11th

Students watched a video titled "Measuring Math" which demonstrated how to measure different ingredients and the importance of measuring correctly. The students will demonstrate what they learned when measuring out ingredients in future cooking labs.

Students were introduced to the foods lab and where told lab expectations and rules, as well as how labs are run and where different things are the lab. Their first cooking lab is on Tuesday and is the fruit freeze.

February 9th

We finished discussing food safety today by reviewing the top ten mistakes people make when preparing food at home and what the students can do to prevent these mistakes from occurring.

February 8th

Students started learning about food borne illnesses and food safety. They watched "The Great Food Fight" and answered some questions, which we then went over and graded and discussed afterward. We also discussed food safety when cooking at home and focused on cross-contamination.

The students took their vocabulary test for the family and independent living skills unit. It was 25 terms and definitions to match up and they were worth 2 points a piece (50 total). There is no redo tests offered on this since we had discussed it so much and told them exactly what would be on the test and since it is the end of the term. If they missed the test, it becomes the student's responsibility to arrange a time to come in and take it sometime next week. After that time, it will go on Skyward as a zero. They also turned in their starter sheets from this week.

Students learned about the "Keys to Caregiving" which included physical, emotional and guidance needs. We also discussed their unit vocabulary test, which included specific terms and definitions, which they will take on tomorrow which students need to study for tonight.

We went through the 5 steps of problem solving, which the students had to write down. We then gave some examples of how the problem solving process could be used. We also discussed family traditions, why we have them and what they are, shared some examples of our own family traditions and watched a clip from "Fiddler on the Roof" about traditions.

The classes learned the definition of the term self-concept and we discussed ways that we can raise others self-concept as well as our own. Students then discussed how advertisers come up with packaging for products and how the way we present ourselves to others is like packaging ourselves to others. Students then created a package from a lunch sack that represents themselves and uses positive labels instead of negative. These are due at the start of class tomorrow (Tuesday, February 2nd) at the start of class.

Students finished watching the video on Child Care safety. We then had an activity were I taught them different stress reducer activities and they got to practice these during class time.

I had to quickly leave yesterday due to a death in my family. 4th and 7th period had some terms and definitions to write down and watched a video on stress. Today, they watched part of a video on child care safety. We will finish this later when we have time. Their assignment for this was to write on their own piece of paper 5 things they already do around their house to make it safer and 5 things they could start doing to improve safety around their home. Then the need to turn this into the basket.

Today, students learned about stress, stressors, distress and stress reducers. All of the terms were defined, explained and discussed as a group. The notes/definitions will be used on the independent living skills unit test which will be given on February 5th.

Students learned about six different poor communication techniques and six good communication techniques to help create effective communication with others. The students need to keep these notes with them for the end of unit test.

Today, students learned about stress reducers. I provided a number of different stress reducers and the class shared ways they prefer to reduce their stress. The class also practiced visual relaxation techniques during the last few minutes of class using a prerecorded relaxation tape.
