September 30th

Students learned how to use the rotary cutters, mats and sergers. Afterwards, they had the rest of class to work on their bookmarks. All CTE Sewing Permits are due to me by Tuesday, October 6th at the end of each class period or it will be considered late.

September 29th

Students reviewed how to thread a machine and then started on their bookmarks. Detailed instructions were provided as well as a teacher demonstration. They will continue working on these tomorrow. Today was also the last day they could retake the "Parts of the sewing machine" quiz. We have offered quiz retakes every day after school this past week.

September 28th

Students had a sub today and learned about values. Nothing was due today.

September 24th

Students learned how to wind a bobbin and thread a sewing machine by watching a teacher demonstration and doing it on their machines while I walked them through it. Students were encouraged to help each other along the way. Any student who missed this day is highly encouraged to go to the following site and click on the first video on bobbin winding. September 23rd

Students worked on their "Crazy Stitching" today (Stitching on paper). They had to complete three out of the seven papers/patterns they had to chose from. They then had to attach these three papers to their CTE Sewing Permit. Tomorrow, students will learn how to wind a bobbin and thread a machine.

September 22nd

We took the parts of the sewing machine quiz and students were given their CTE sewing permits to start working on and filling out. Students who passed the quiz with 8 out of 12 correct or better stapled the quiz to their CTE sewing permit. Students who did not pass can come Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday of this week or Tuesday of next week to retake it. They must be in the classroom and ready for the quiz by 2:40.

September 21st

Students learned the parts of the sewing machine and what they are used for. They have to study these parts tonight in preparation for a quiz tomorrow where they will need to be able to identify 8 out of 12 parts of the machine to pass. If they don't pass, they can come after school Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday of this week or Tuesday of next week to retake the quiz. These points will count as points on their "Sewing Permit."

September 18th

Students watched a video on how to care for fabrics and fibers titled "Gone with the wash." They also had a few questions they had to answer using the information in the video. This was turned in for points and will show up on Powerschool on Monday.

September 17th

After filling out their student/teacher assessment sheet for Student-Led Conferences, the students collected their sewing supplies for the upcoming sewing unit and learned about the rules and expectations of their behavior in the sewing lab, as well as how they will be graded and what assignments/projects they will complete during the rest of this unit.

September 16th

Students were given a second day in the computer lab to finish their "Fabric Online" web quest paper. These are due at the beginning of class on Thursday, September 17th. Anyone who didn't finish today was told that this is now homework for tonight.

September 15th

Students researched different fabrics and textiles using a website from ThinkQuest.org titled "Fabric Online". Students were given specific questions to research and find. This assignment is due Thursday at the beginning of their class period and they will have tomorrow to work on this during class as well. September 14th

The students took their vocabulary test for the family and independent living skills unit. It was 24 terms and definitions to match up and they were worth 2 points a piece. There is no redo tests offered on this since we had discussed it so much and told them exactly what would be on the test. We then finished watching the child care safety video we started last Wednesday. For the next two days, we will be meeting in the G208 computer lab to learn about textiles and clothing, then we will be back in the sewing lab for the rest of the term.

September 11th

Students learned about the "Keys to Caregiving" which included physical, emotional and guidance needs. We also discussed their unit vocabulary test, which included specific terms and definitions, which they will take on Monday which students need to study for over the weekend.

September 10th

Each class was given the opportunity to chose how they would like to learn about child care safety and child proofing a home. They could chose from a video on child proofing and safety, a game/quiz, or doing a Think/pair/share activity using common items found around the home which may cause injuries. 1st, 2nd, and 7th choose the video and 4th period choose the game. I also reminded the class about their Unit test on Monday. There are 24 terms/definitions and the students have to match the correct term to the definition. It is worth 48 points.

September 9th

We went through the 5 steps of problem solving, which the students had to write down. We then gave some examples of how the problem solving process could be used. We also discussed family traditions, why we have them and what they are, shared some examples of our own family traditions and watched a clip from "Fiddler on the Roof."

September 8th

Students started class by having a starter and starting a new Starter sheet for this week. We discussed what a family is, as well as identifying different family types. They also watched a video about the functions of a family, no matter what type of family they have.

September 4th

Today, students learned about stress reducers. I provided a number of different stress reducers and the class shared ways they prefer to reduce their stress. The class also practiced relaxation techniques during the last few minutes of class using a prerecorded relaxation tape. They also turned in their first week of starters, which is worth 25 points on their grades.

September 3rd

The classes learned the definition of the term self-concept and we discussed ways that we can raise others self-concept as well as our own. Students then discussed how advertisers come up with packaging for products and how the way we present ourselves to others is like packaging ourselves to others. Students then created a package from a lunch sack that represents themselves and uses positive labels instead of negative. These are due at the start of class tomorrow (Friday, September 4th) at the start of class.

September 2nd

Students learned about and defined social skills, acceptable and unacceptable behavior and manners. They discussed what each one meant and gave examples of each. We then moved on to how this relates to friendships and finding good friends.

September 1st

Today, students learned about stress, stressors, distress and stress reducers. All of the terms were defined, explained and discussed as a group. The notes/definitions will be used on the independent living skills unit test.
