May 30th
Students were given their final grades and citizenship. Students were also given time to look their grade over carefully for any mistakes I made have made or computer errors. They also watched a video on Food Science Careers and we discussed other careers in the food and nutrition industry.

May 29th
Students had a lab to review measuring and reading a recipe. It was called "Oatmeal munchies" and was worth 50 points on their grade. Any student who was absent needs to get the recipe from me and make them at home sometime before Friday so that this can be placed on their grade.

May 28th
Students made Vanishing Breakfast Biscuits to help reinforce our lesson from last week about the importance off reading recipes. Any student who was absent must make the lab at home and return the recipe signed by a parent stating that their student did the assignment.

May 27th
Students used their measuring skills while making Fruit freezes. They had to demonstrate proper lab procedures and hygenine as well. Students who were not here today (for any reason) will have to make the lab at home and return a note signed by a parent saying their student made the lab in order to make-up the missing points. Today was also the last day to turn in any late work from this past two weeks and any extra credit, including any unused hall passes and late passes.
May 23rd
Students worked as a group on an activity to figure out the names of different types of cooking equipment and the meanings of different cooking terms. The answers were provided at the end of class so students could see how they did. This assignment was not turned in for points.
May 22nd
Students watched a video about My Pyramid, which took the place of the food guide pyramid a few years ago. We discussed the changes which have taken place and students could change their diets to align more closely to the pyramid. The students also had a word search to work on during the last few minutes of class, but was not turned in for points.
May 21st
Students learned about the parts to a food label and about the importance of reading food labels to help become better consumers and to become more aware of what is in the foods they are eating.
May 20th
Students learned about how recipes are formatted and why. We also covered the importance of reading through a recipe before beginning and collecting all of the ingredients to make sure they have all of the ingredients. Students had a wordsearch on the eight points of a good recipe to turn in for 16 points. Most turned it in at the end of class.
May 19th
Students watched a video titled "Measuring Math" which demonstrated how to measure different ingredients and the importance of measuring correctly. The students will demonstrate what they learned when measuring out ingredients in a future foods lab.
May 16th
Students made the ramen noodle stir-fry today. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for this lab, they must make it up in the next week and a half (by the 27th) in order for me to get the points on their grade before the end of the term.

May 15th
Students made a fruit salad today using their cooking terms and pieces of equipment they learned about last week. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for this lab, they must make it up in the next week and a half (by the 27th) in order for me to get the points on their grade before the end of the term.
May 14th
Students watched a video titled "The Great Food Fight." They also had to answer questions with a partner on information found in the video. We then discussed food safety and proper kitchen hygiene when preparing and eating foods. The students did not turn their papers in for points. It was for information and awareness purposes only.

May 13th
Students were introduced to the foods lab and where told lab expectations and rules, as well as how labs are run and where different things are the lab. Their first cooking lab is on Thursday and is the fruit salad. They were also reminded that the last day to turn in extra credit or late work is Tuesday, May 27th.

May 12th
Students took their vocabulary test today which was worth 42 points with each question worth 2 points a piece. We were also able to correct and score it during class.

May 9th
Students learned about the "Keys to caregiving" which included physical, emotional and guidance needs. We also discussed child abuse and some off the signs caregivers need to look for. We also discussed their unit vocabulary test on Monday which students need to study for.
May 8th
While watching a video on child care safety and childproofing a home, students had to identify at least 5 safety hazards they currently have at home. Afterwards, students had to analyze 5 ways they can eliminate these safety hazards and turn this into the turn-in basket.
May 7th
Students discussed what a family is, family types and watched a portion of a video which demonstrates child proofing a home for the younger members of our family. We will finish watching it and discuss it tomorrow.

May 6th
Students learned about and defined social skills, acceptable and unacceptable behavior and manners. They discussed what each one meant and gave examples of each. We then moved on to how this relates to friendships and finding good friends.

May 5th
Today, students learned about stress, stressors, distress and stress reducers. All of the terms were defined, explained and discussed as a group. The notes/definitions will be used on the independent living skills unit test on Friday. Students were also given their permission form for the Hogle Zoo field trip on May 30th. These are due back on May 16th.

May 2nd
Students discussed attentive listening, as well as what attentive listening looks, feels and sounds like as well as what it doesn't look, feel and sound like. They also had an activity on attentive listening to figure out what sounds they were hearing.

May 1st
Students learned about six different poor communication techniques and six good communication techniques to help create effective communication with others. The students need to keep these notes with them for the end of unit test.
