January 30th

Students learned about and defined social skills, acceptable and unacceptable behavior and manners. They discussed what each one meant and gave examples of each. We then moved on to how this relates to friendships and finding good friends.

January 29th

Today, students learned about stress, stressors, distress and stress reducers. All of the terms were defined, explained and discussed as a group. The class also practiced relaxation techniques during the last few minutes of class using a prerecorded relaxation tape.

January 28th

The classes learned the definition of the term self-concept and we discussed ways that we can raise others self-concept as well as our own. Students then discussed how advertisers come up with packaging for products and how the way we present ourselves to others is like packaging ourselves to others. Students then created a package from a lunch sack that represents themsleves and uses positive labels instead of negative. These are due at the start of class tomorrow (Tuesday).

January 25th

Students discussed attentive listening, as well as what attentive listening looks, feels and sounds like as well as what it doesn't look, feel and sound like. They also had an activity on attentive listening to earn prizes!

January 24th

Students learned about six different poor communication techniques and six good communication techniques to help create effective communication with others. The students need to keep these notes with them for the end of unit test.

January 23rd

Students received their seating assignment. We started learning about the three types of communication as well as the six types of personal communicators. They kept their notes in their binder to use to study for their end of unit test.

January 22nd

Welcome to the new semester! Students reviewed the disclosure and course content of the Family and Consumer Sciences portion of CTE Intro. They will receive assigned seats tomorrow and we will be starting with the Family and Independent living skills unit.

January 17th

Students were given their final grades and citizenship. Students were also given time to look their grade over carefully for any mistakes I made have made or computer errors.

January 16th

Students last cooking lab was today. They prepared a ramen noodle stir-fry. Any student who was absent today will be unable to make this lab up since tomorrow is the last day of the semester and students will be given their final grades before they leave class.

January 15th

Students learned about My Pyramid, which took the place of the food guide pyramid a few years ago. We discussed the changes which have taken place and students could change their diets to align more closely to the pyramid. The students also had a word search to work on during the last few minutes of class, but was not turned in for points.

January 14th

Students made a fruit salad today using their cooking terms and pieces of equipment they learned about last week. The lab was worth 50 points. If a student was absent for this lab, they must make it up sometime this week (by Thursday) in order for me to get the points on their grade before the end of the semester.

January 11th

Students learned about the parts to a food label and about the importance of reading food labels to help become better consumers and to become more aware of what is in the foods they are eating. No assignment was due, but today was the last day to turn in missing/late work, extra credit, labs and projects from this past term.

January 10th

Students worked as a group on an activity to figure out the names of different types of cooking equipment and the meanings on different cooking terms. The answers were provided at the end so students could see how they did. Their lab on Monday will involve knowing the names of some of the pieces of equipment and various cooking terms. This was not turned in for points.

January 9th

Students had a lab to review measuring and reading a recipe. It was called "Oatmeal munchies" and was worth 50 points on their grade. Any student who was absent needs to get the recipe from me and make them at home sometime before Friday so that this can be placed on their grade. Any missing/late assignments, extra credit, projects or labs need to be turned in by Friday for me to grade it and get it on their grade.

January 8th

Students made Vanishing Breakfast Biscuits to help reinforce our lesson from yesterday about the importance off reading recipes. Any student who was absent must make the lab at home and return the recipe signed by a parent stating that their student did the assignment.

January 7th

Students learned about how recipes are formatted and why. We also covered the importance of reading through a recipe before beginning and collecting all of the ingredients to make sure they have all of the ingredients.

January 4th

Students used their measuring skills to while making Fruit freezes. They had to demonstrate proper lab procedures and hygenine as well. Students who were not here today will have to make the lab at home and return a note signed by a parent saying their student made the lab in order to make-up the missing points.

January 3rd

Students watched a demonstration on measuring and using recipes. We discussed the importance of math skills and knowledge in cooking and changing recipes. They also had a set of questions to answer as we went along that students turned in at the end of class for points.

January 2nd

Students watched a video titled "The Great Food Fight." They also had to answer questions with a partner on information found in the video. We then discussed food safety and proper kitchen hygiene when preparing and eating foods. Students had to turn in their questionnaire before they left class.
